Mrs. Maria Luisa Ribeiro, Chef de Cabinet to the Secretary-General
Mr. Farrukh Khan, Chef de Cabinet to the President of the 75th session of the General Assembly
I am pleased to address you at the launch of this Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, which 75 years after its founding continues to be the main bulwark of the multilateral system and the most important guarantor of international peace and security.
We thank the Venezuelan delegation, especially Ambassador Samuel Moncada, for coordinating the launching of this meaningful initiative and we are delighted to have worked together with the delegations that are now part of this Group of Friends, of which Cuba takes pride in being a founding member.
Seventy-five years after signing the Charter of the United Nations, it is more important than ever to recognize and promote the centrality of the UN Chapter, to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of international law and the strengthening of multilateralism, cooperation with international organizations and the empowerment of the General Assembly.
In a world still plagued with conflicts, where unconventional warfare is promoted, governments are demonized in order to justify regime change strategies and unilateral coercive measures are imposed as a means to achieve political objectives, to the detriment of the efforts of this Organization to achieve the sustainable development of our peoples, this Group of Friends must undertake the safeguard of the postulates of the Charter of the United Nations as its highest goal and promote viable alternatives to ensure the emergence of a more just and democratic international order. It should also be a catalyst for greater cooperation and solidarity among the members of the Organization.
I am pleased to ratify Cuba's most sincere commitment to work to guarantee that this Group fulfills its mission to address the complex and emerging challenges and threats facing humankind, based on the most unrestricted respect for the Charter of the Organization, and to promote a peaceful, prosperous, just and equitable world.
