75 UNGA: Statement by Cuba, on behalf of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (GRULAC) at the UNGA plenary meeting to pay tribute to Jovenel Moïse, President of Haiti. New York, July 14, 2021

Mr. President, I have the honor to take the floor on behalf of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (GRULAC). We thank you for convening this solemn session of the General Assembly to pay tribute to the late President of Haiti, His Excellency Mr. Jovenel Moïse, who was assassinated at his residence in Port-au-Prince, on 7 July 2021.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, to the Haitian people and government, while reiterating our full support and solidarity at this time with Haiti, a member of the GRULAC family.

We condemn the cowardly assassination of President Moïse, and trust that this crime will not go unpunished.

We categorically reject violence in all its expressions, urge dialogue and call for peace. We support the constitutional order, the rule of law and democratic institutions.

We are confident that the Haitian people will be able to overcome this situation, and will continue to advance on their path towards sustainable development, an effort that the international community must continue to support.

Thank you.
