74 UNGA: Statement by the delegation of Cuba “Committee on Relations with the Host Country”. New York, 25 February 2020

Mr. President,

We appreciate this meeting of the Committee on Relations with the Host Country.

The current session of the Committee should promote and find effective solutions to the problems raised by Member States, as a result of the repeated noncompliance of the Host Country with the obligations stemming from the United Nations Headquarters Agreement. The legal mechanisms established to resolve disputes and restore violated rights should be used.

Co-Chairs,

First of all, we would like to extend our congratulations to the distinguished Ambassadors of Poland and the United Arab Emirates on their appointment as co-chairs of the intergovernmental negotiation process for the reform of the Security Council at the 74th session. The delegation of Cuba wishes them every success in their work, for which they count on our support.

Mr. Chairman,

In a world driven by selfish interests, in which capitalism considers health a commodity and not a right, it will be impossible to achieve goal 3 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being of all at all ages", and in particular, that of achieving universal health coverage for all people.

Mr. President,

We are grateful for convening this debate on agenda item 11 of the plenary meeting, entitled: Sport for development and peace: building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal, under which draft resolutions A/74/L.18 and A/74/L.24 have been submitted, both co-sponsored by our delegation.

We take this opportunity to thank the delegations of Japan and Armenia for the presentation of both drafts, and for their performance during the negotiations.

Mr. President,

Cuba would like to begin by thanking the United Nations General Assembly for convening this high-level event to follow up on the mandates given by this same organ in November 2014, after adopting the Resolution on the "Programme of Action in Favor of Landlocked Developing Countries for the Decade 2014-2024". The international community back then committed itself to tackle and contribute to overcoming the challenges faced by landlocked developing countries.
