Athens, December 20 The Hellenic Cuban Friendship and Solidarity Association held a virtual event against the blockade and in solidarity with Cuba. The Presidents of the Association of Athens, Thessaloniki and the islands of Kefaloniá and Itaca spoke. The motto of the event was "Cuba against the blockade" and is part of the European campaign against the blockade to Cuba.
The teleconference began with the words of the ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Greece, Zelmys María Domínguez Cortina, who in her speech mentioned the significance of the criminal, economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba and the multiple negative campaigns of various nature of the US against Cuba for 6 decades. She pointed out that the United States uses “ideological subversion, invents false pretexts to place us on unjust lists, creates campaigns against our doctors, against our leaders, against the achievements and actions of the Cuban revolution, also creates false victims and false violations of human rights to tarnish the image of the revolution ”. She ended her words by assuring that "Cuba will forever maintain its positions of principle and will continue to resist threats and pressure and will continue to defend the just causes of humanity" and thanking friends in solidarity for their permanent support.
Next, the President of the Athens Association, Nikos Karandreas, spoke about the general and historical framework of the blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba and its impact on the development of Cuba and on the daily life of the Cuban people. He mentioned that 61 years after the revolutionary triumph, Cuba “continues its difficult journey. It is a truly independent country, proof that the conquest of dignity, freedom, popular sovereignty, social justice is possible even in the face of the most powerful enemy. (…) And that example shows us that the struggle for independence and social liberation is united with solidarity with the struggles of peoples in all parts of the world. The battle that Cuba is fighting is our own battle, it is a cause of all men who recognize its tremendous contribution and demand the immediate lifting of the blockade”.
The President of Kefaloniá and Itaca, Yanis Kuruklis, followed, who explained the strengthening of the blockade in the last three years and its extraterritorial nature. He stressed that the blockade also has a direct impact due to its imposition on third countries and companies that are not Cuban or North American. And he concluded that “in these conditions, the need to strengthen our solidarity with the socialist revolution and concrete support for the Cuban people's struggle for the defense of popular power, sovereignty, dignity and its conquests is even more necessary, to increase our actions together with the international solidarity movement”.
The last speaker was the President of Thessaloniki, the second largest city in the country, Apostolis Skufas, who explained the impact of the blockade on the Cuban government's confrontation with the COVID'19 pandemic. He mentioned, among other things, Cuba's aid to countries that requested it and the efforts made by the Henry Reeve International Brigade. He stressed that “concrete solidarity with the Cuban Revolution is our duty that we cannot forget. The Cuban Revolution is an example of resistance against the North American and European imperialists, enemies of the peoples of the entire world. Solidarity is the greatest weapon of the peoples against the new order and imperialism ”.
The event was dedicated to comrade Dionisis Georgópulos, since 1990 a member of the Athens Board of Directors and founder and President for many years of the Association Branch on the Kefaloniá and Itaca islands who died a month ago.
The virtual meeting of solidarity against the blockade ended with the words of the President of Athens who emphasized the need to increase and deepen solidarity activities with Cuba and the condemnation of the blockade imposed by US imperialism.
The solidarity activity was one more example of the permanent support of the Greek friends towards Cuba in the framework of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).
