Vice chancellor of the UWI gives a keynote lecture at the University of Havana

In the context of the final day of the XIII International Conference of the Chair of Caribbean Studies "Norman Girvan" of the University of Havana, Dr. Hilary Beckles, vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), gave a keynote lecture at the "Aula Magna" of the Cuban higher education centre.

Havana, Cuba, 11 December 2019. In the context of the final day of the XIII International Conference of the Chair of Caribbean Studies "Norman Girvan" of the University of Havana, Dr. Hilary Beckles, vice chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), gave a keynote lecture at the "Aula Magna" of the Cuban higher education centre.

During his presentation, Dr. Beckles reflected on the history of the Caribbean, its struggles, as well as how much can be done from the universities of the region, to strenghen its unity. The Caribbean academic also expressed his satisfaction for being in Cuba, a country he described as a “great nation”, and for the opportunity to do so "in the context of the celebration of the life and legacy of Professor Norman Girvan, a close collaborator and personal friend".

Dr. Dionisio Záldivar Silva, first vice chancellor of the University of Havana, and Dr. Antonio Romero Gómez, president of the Norman Girvan Chair of Caribbean Studies, were among the attendants, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps from the Greater Caribbean, officials of the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Higher Education, and teachers and students of the University of Havana.

Professor Hilary Beckles has had a distinguished career as an academic, and is recognized as a global public activist in the field of social justice and for the empowerment of minorities. He is a member of the UNDP Advisory Panel on the Caribbean Human Development Report. In 2015, he was invited by the president of the UN General Assembly to deliver the keynote address during the session in which the 2015-2024 period was declared as the UN decade for people of African descent.
