The revitalization of the General Assembly entails full respect for the UN Charter and the mandates and functions of its main organs, said Cuba.

New York, 27 March, 2019.Cuba attended today the thematic meeting on the working methods of the General Assembly, held within the framework of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly, calling for respecting the mandates and functions of the Assembly and its Main Committees, emphasizing that the work of the Working Group should not lead to reinterpreting such mandates.

In this regard, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations and Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, affirmed that the revitalization process of the Assembly cannot be taken lightly, nor can it be understood as a superficial review of the agendas of the General Assembly and its Main Committees, or the frequency in addressing their issues. This also implies full respect for the UN Charter, the rules of procedure of its main organs, its mandates and functions, she added.

The Cuban diplomat recognized the sovereign right of the Member States to introduce new items and / or submit new resolutions under the agenda items of the General Assembly and its Main Committees, as deemed appropriate and without conditions.

To conclude, Rodríguez Abascal reiterated Cuba's support for the revitalization process of the General Assembly, as well as for the work of the Co-chairs of this Working Group.
