New York, 6 February 2018. Ambassador Anayansi Rodriguez Camejo, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, called for a genuine and profound reform of the Security Council, to convert it into an effective, transparent, representative, democratic body in line with developments of the United Nations and international relations.
During her statement in the Security Council's Open Debate entitled "Implementation of Note S/2017/507: Working Methods", the Cuban representative called for prompt action to move towards democratizing this main UN body, both in its composition and working methods, aimed not to jeopardize the credibility of the United Nations and its long-term legitimacy.
In like manner, she rejected the selective manipulation of the organ's operating practices and the politicization of certain issues in keeping with particular interests of domination and hegemony.
She further expressed her concern at the Council's tendency to consider issues that do not pose an immediate threat to international peace and security and to assume functions beyond its competence, increasingly usurping the role conferred by the Charter to other United Nations bodies, particularly the General Assembly.
Rodriguez Camejo once again called for the immediate elimination of the anachronistic and undemocratic privilege of the veto and reiterated the need for the Security Council to adopt a final text regulating its work, thus ending the "provisional" status of the rules of procedure it has had for more than 70 years.
