The President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins expresses his condolences on the death of the Historian of the City of Havana, the beloved Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler.

Dublin, July 31, 2020. The President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, through his twitter account, expressed his condolences for the death of the Historian of the City of Havana, the beloved Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, which occurred on the day today in the Cuban capital.

“I am saddened to hear of the death of the Historian of the City of Havana, Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, whom I had the pleasure of meeting. Ireland shares the sorrow of the Cuban people for the loss of its esteemed historian.”

Dr. Leal was a deep connoisseur of Irish history. He stimulated and supported historical research on the ties between the two countries in the most diverse spheres, and also promoted the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

The Office he directed with such passion has been a fervent sponsor of the celebration in Havana of the traditional Saint Patrick Day.
