In the presence of the Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Fernando González Llort, President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples (ICAP, by its Spanish initials) and Member of the National Assembly of the People´s Power, "ÖKG", the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association celebrated the 50th anniversary of its foundation.
The activities which have been carried out at various times throughout this year, culminated in the public celebration held this Saturday at the ÖKG headquarters in Vienna's Wieden District, with the participation of a host of audience in solidarity with the Cuban Revolution.
At the event, the Hero of the Republic of Cuba thanked the members of ÖKG for their permanent support and loyalty to the Cuban Revolution, since the creation of the organization in 1969. The work done by the Committee for the Liberation of the Cuban Five, which facilitated their return to Cuban territory, particularly its president, Ms. Brigitte Ortner was highlighted.
The ÖKG´s President, Michael Wögerer, gave Fernando González a public statement regarding the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and rejected the recent announcement by the Trump´s Administration to implement Title III of the Helms-Burton Act.
The event, also dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, was attended by the Cuban Ambassador to Austria, Juan Antonio Fernández Palacios, the Ambassador of Venezuela, Jesse Chacón, members of both diplomatic missions and other countries of the Latin American and Caribbean Group. The activity was enlivened by the musical groups “Presión Cubana”, composed of Cuban musicians residing in Austria and “Atacama”, a solidarity group from Austria.
ÖKG was founded in 1969. Since then, it has accompanied Cuba in all its battles: in denouncing the genocidal economic, commercial, and financial blockade of the United States; in demanding the return of the territory illegally occupied by the United States Naval Base in Guantánamo; in demanding the release of the Cuban Five; in offering truthful information about Cuba in the face of media manipulation campaigns; in recovering from damage caused by hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters; in the Voluntary Work Brigades; and in many other activities.
