Ottawa, March 14, 2019—On Wednesday March 13, Ambassador of Cuba to Canada, Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, visited Queen’ s University in Kingston, Ontario. At this prestigious high education center, she was received by Dr. Tom Harris, Interim Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), with whom she discussed the existing potentials to broaden the academic and research exchanges between Queen´s University and several Cuban universities.
Queen´s and the University of Havana have signed an Exchange Agreement under which Canadian students travel to Cuba on a two-week academic program. This partnership has been in place for over a decade.
Ambassador Vidal´s intense agenda concluded with a Public Talk on the new Cuban Constitution and the island´s position on the situation in Venezuela. More than 50 people were in the room, including Venezuela´s Consul in Toronto, Mrs. Yolanda Brito; members of the Canada-Cuba Kingston Friendship Association; as well as Queen´s professors and students. The Cuban diplomat also met with different authorities from various faculties, namely, Dr. Barbara Crow, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science; Dr. Christine Sypnowich, Head of the Department of Philosophy; as well as with women professors from the History and Film & Media Departments.
Ambassador Vidal gave an interview to Global News Kingston in which she referred to her visit objectives and the long-standing relationship between the Queen´s and the University of Havana. She also recalled her last visit to Queen´s ten years ago on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Cuban Revolution to foster Canada-Cuba relations.
Mrs. Areadna Quintana, Press and Cultural Attaché, and Mr. David Aldama, Third Secretary at the Embassy of Cuba in Ottawa, accompanied Ambassador Vidal Ferreiro.
