The Ambassador of Cuba to Ghana, Pedro Luis Despaigne González presented at the Freedom Center in Accra and before a representation of Ghanaian press media, the Cuban Report on the blockade corresponding to 2019, as well as the draft resolution on the blockade that will be presented at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on November 6 and 7, 2019.
The Ambassador began his presentation, explaining to the attendees that on 10th October, but in 1868, the struggle for independence and national sovereignty began in Cuba, and which has its continuity in the heroic battle that the Cuban people wage in against a criminal blockade of more than five decades implemented by 12 successive US administrations. He also explained how under the current occupant of the White House the anti-Cuban measures have intensified, and Title III of the interventionist Helms-Burton Act was activated for the first time.
The Cuban diplomat thanked the international community for its support for Cuba in its battle against the blockade, and highlighted how its rejection has become a matter of consensus of the African Union, which has permanently reiterated its call to its lifting. In particular, he thanked to the people of Ghana for their active participation in the VI African Continental Conference of Solidarity with Cuba, just concluded in the city of Abuja, Nigeria.
In the framework of the Press Conference, the President of the Teachers’ and Education Workers’ Union, Peter K. Lumor, presented the Common Declaration adopted by the delegation of Ghana, participating in the Abuja Conference, and condemning the blockade. The union leader in his speech made reference to the legacy in Africa of Commanders Fidel Castro and Ernesto Ché Guevara.
The Conference was covered by Pan African TV and Diplomatic Affairs television channels; The Insight and Ghanaian Times newspapers; and other radio and digital media: including GBC Radio, Citi FM, and Kasapa FM, who at the end of the presentations interviewed the Ambassador and other assistants.
The Conference was an expression of Ghana's support for Cuba in the battle against the blockade, as it was attended by an important representation of the groups and organizations that make up the Solidarity Movement with Cuba as: the Trade Unions Congress of Ghana (TUC); the Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG), the All African People’s Revolutionary Party (A-APRP); the Association of Ghanaian Trained in Cuba (ESBECAN).
