New York, 7 October 2019. The Cuban delegation participated today in the General Debate of the Second Committee of the United Nations, at its 74th session, where it expressed its intention to contribute to the elimination of the obstacles, gaps and challenges faced by the world community in terms of development, especially affecting the most vulnerable countries, in particular African countries, the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, small island developing States, countries and peoples under foreign occupation, as well as the specific difficulties faced by middle-income countries.
Within this framework, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, denounced the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, incompatible with international law and the Charter of the United Nations; and specifically, the illegal, immoral, criminal and unjust economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States against the island, which has been strengthened this year with the activation of Title III of the Helms Burton Act.
Cuba, she added, has withstood the impact of the implementation of these measures, rejected by the international community, while its people continue to achieve their Development Plan until 2030, in order to build an independent, sovereign, prosperous, democratic and sustainable socialist nation, perfectly in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
The Chargé d'Affaires a.i. also showed that the full and timely implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will not be possible as long as unilateral, protectionist and discriminatory actions persist which only promote strictly national interests, to the detriment of the necessary global and multilateral solutions to the problems and challenges facing humanity, particularly the developing world.
She stated that there are the resources, the technology and the capacity to reverse the problems of development, poverty, exclusion and social inequality in the world. While the political will and commitment of the most powerful States to honor their international obligations has been lacking.
