Cuba declares at the United Nations that the United States undermines the possibility of peace in the Middle East

New York, 2 December 2020.During his statement on agenda items 37 and 38 of the United Nations: “The situation in the Middle East and the Question of Palestine”, Ambassador Pedro L.Pedroso, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the world organization, denounced that while governments around the world work tirelessly to fight the pandemic, Israel continues the occupation of the Palestinian territory, expanding its annexation policy and increasing its illegal and colonizing practices and measures.

He described as alarming that, in light of this serious threat to international peace and security, the Security Council remains silent and he reiterated the call for this body to fulfill the responsibility under the UN Charter in maintaining international peace and security and to demand an immediate end to the occupation of Palestinian territories and aggressive policies and colonizing practices by Israel. Likewise, he highlighted that the US repeated obstruction, accomplice to the Israeli occupation and aggression is plunging the Security Council into discredit.

Pedroso Cuesta ratified the unrestricted support for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on the creation of two States which allows its people to exercise the right to self-determination and to establish an independent and sovereign State on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as the right to return of refugees. He expressed the unwavering solidarity and support for Palestine´s accession to full membership to the United Nations, while noting that the question of Palestine and the situation in the Middle East remain a pending issue of the United Nations.

Moreover, the Cuban diplomat rejected the numerous unilateral actions of the United States government that undermine the possibility of peace in the region: the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the establishment of its diplomatic representation in that city, disrespecting its historical status; the withdrawal of financial support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, as another attempt to suffocate the Palestinian people; the so-called "deal of the century", which disregards the creation of a Palestinian State; and its decision to recognize the occupied Syrian Golan as Israel´s territory.
