Suva, June 23. The Cuban Ambassador to Fiji, Carlos Manuel Rojas Lago, held a working session with Mr. Apolosi Leiwaqa, director of Asia Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country. In the fruitful meeting, both discussed extensively on issues of interest on the international scene and in the region, in addition to evaluating the existing potential to jointly promote new cooperation programs.
Mr. Leiwaqa referred to the negative impact for island countries of the COVID19 pandemic, which has seen its main sources of income associated with the tourism sector fall. He explained that Fiji has already begun to implement the first actions for recovery, which prioritize prevention and safety of the population firstly, and secondly, stimulation of the economy.
On his side, the highest-rank representative of the Caribbean nation here thanked again the support of this Pacific Island to the fight of the Cuban people against the policy of blockade imposed by the United States, which has worsened even amid the negative effects of the pandemic. At the same time, he updated on the current status of the main components in the bilateral ties.
At the conclusion of the talks, both diplomats exchanged with representatives of the agricultural and business promotion sector, a space in which the existing opportunities for the development of projects in the field of sugar agribusiness and tobacco cultivation were ratified.
