(Addis Ababa, October 11, 2019). The Ministries of Health of Cuba and Ethiopia signed today in Addis Ababa a Cooperation Agreement for the Delivery of Medical Services, with the purpose of expanding the areas of cooperation and support between both countries in this important sector.
The agreement signed by the Minister of Health of Ethiopia, Dr. Lia Tadesse on behalf of the Ministry of Health of her country and by the Ambassador of Cuba in Ethiopia, Vilma Thomas on behalf of the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba, sets the framework to expand the delivery of medical services by Cuban health professionals in Ethiopia and to benefit from the Cuban experience in the training of specialists in health fields.
The signing of this agreement corresponds to the shared interest of Cuba and Ethiopia to continue strengthening their bilateral relations and expand cooperation in those areas where there are greater opportunities for exchange, for the mutual benefit of both countries and peoples.
Currently, 23 Cuban professionals in the health sector provide medical collaboration in Ethiopia, hundreds of Ethiopians have graduated in Cuba in various medical specialties and dozens are still studying in Cuban institutions.
The importance of the collaboration that Cuba has offered to this country of the African horn, in the field of health, was recently recognized by the Society of Surgery of Ethiopia that granted Cuba its 2019 annual award for its contribution to the development of the surgery service and training health professionals in Ethiopia.
