Belfast, January 2019. The ambassadors of Cuba to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Teresita Vicente Sotolongo, and to Ireland, Hugo René Ramos Milanes, made a working visit to the city of Belfast, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, which among other activities was celebrated with a reception offered by Deirdre Hargey, Mayor of the City.
In her speech at the beginning of the reception, held in one of the Halls of the City Council, the Mayor expressed deep sympathies for the Cuban Revolution, highlighted its multiple achievements in various spheres and renewed solidarity with the Cuban people, especially to achieve the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade to which it has been subjected for nearly six decades.
The Ambassador Teresita Vicente in her speech highlighted the deep appreciation for the solidarity offered and urged those present to keep it up in the face of the new measures adopted by the Trump Government, to intensify the blockade and continue to hinder bilateral relations, as well as facing the aggressiveness manifests by that administration against the progressive forces in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ambassador Hugo Ramos referred to the historical ties between both peoples and the privilege and satisfaction that constitute the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution in an emblematic city like Belfast.
He also highlighted and thanked the presence of a large and enthusiastic representation of members of the "Cuba Support Group", a fraternal organization that, in parallel to the support of an unbreakable solidarity with the Cuban people, has endeavored to develop various cooperation projects, and coordinated the program of the various activities deployed by Cuban diplomats. Present were also representatives of various political forces and friends from a wide variety of sectors, as well as Cubans living in Northern Ireland.
In the early afternoon both Cuban ambassadors had paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Belfast, in which they were accompanied by Antonio Rodríguez Valcárcel, Minister Counselor and Soraya Torres Jaime, Consul, of the Cuban embassies in London and Dublin, respectively.
