Jakarta, July 7- The Assistant Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for Political Security, His Excellency Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan, and the accredited Ambassador to Indonesia, Tania Velázquez López, held a conversation via videoconference, occasion in which they exchanged on the historic friendly relations between the Caribbean island and the member countries of ASEAN, as well as the broad coincidences in the foreign policy projections of both parties.
The Assistant Secretary-General highlighted the valuable contribution of the various medical brigades that, both in the current circumstances and over the years, have provided humanitarian aid to the peoples of the world, especially third world nations, including ASEAN member countries, in the confronting devastating consequences caused by natural disasters and epidemics, such as Ebola and Covid-19, which are currently being fought globally. He also highlighted the relevant role played by the Greater Antilles within the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries and in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
For her part, the Cuban diplomat, after commenting on the possible areas in which the Island is able to expand its collaboration with the regional bloc, with emphasis on sectors such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and the export of professional services, reaffirmed her full willingness in Jakarta to work together with the Permanent Secretariat of ASEAN, established in this city, in order to promote dialogue, which contributes to mutual knowledge and the strengthening of cooperation ties.
She also referred to the relevant agreement on positions and the mutual support between the member countries of ASEAN and Cuba in the multilateral sphere, such as the Human Rights Council, while recognizing the support provided by the bloc and its member states to the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States Government against Cuba and the pronouncement that, since 2015, the Association has made in the debate on this Resolution.
